On December 28, 2019, a devastating road crash occurred in Egypt, claiming the lives of six people, including tourists from India and Malaysia, and leaving at least 24 others injured.

The accident took place when two buses carrying tourists collided with a truck east of Cairo on the road to the Ain Sokhna resort on the Red Sea, a security official told AFP.

Among the fatalities were two female Malaysian tourists, an Indian man, and three Egyptians – a bus driver, a tour guide, and a security guard.

At least 24 others were injured, with several tourists left in serious condition, according to a medical source.

Despite the severity of the crash, efforts by Egyptian authorities to crack down on traffic violations have shown promise in recent years, with official figures indicating a decline in road deaths.

According to the bureau of statistics, road accidents decreased from 11,098 in 2017 to 8,480 in 2018, while deaths from traffic accidents fell from over 5,000 in 2016 to 3,087 in 2018.

Ain Sokhna, the site of the crash, is a popular seaside resort town in the Suez governorate southeast of Cairo, home to several petrochemical, ceramics, and steel factories.
