On Saturday, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Directorate of Criminal Investigations detectives intercepted a 10,000-litre water bowser at Sultan Hamud, Makueni County, containing 7,500 litres of illegal ethanol valued at over Sh2 million.
The vehicle was found to have a concealed compartment containing ethanol, while another compartment had 2,500 litres of water. The truck driver was arrested and will be arraigned alongside the truck owner.
According to KRA, samples taken for testing at the KRA and government chemist laboratory turned positive for ethanol. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend and charge the owners and smugglers.
As part of efforts to combat illicit production and consumption of spirit-based beverages, KRA introduced procedures in 2015 to govern access, purchase, and importation of ethanol. The procedures, which took effect from September 1, 2015, are aimed at controlling access to ethanol and preventing revenue loss.
KRA has made deliberate efforts to safeguard the borders and seal all revenue loopholes, ensuring a level ground for all traders in the market. The authority is committed to fighting illicit trade and contraband goods.
