Christmas celebrations were marred in Kisumu County as doctors went on strike, leaving patients without medical care. However, the situation has taken a turn for the better after talks between the County Government of Kisumu and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, Nyanza Branch, led to an agreement.

According to a statement released on Saturday, the strike has been called off with immediate effect. The doctors were advised to resume work immediately and not later than 48 hours, with a deadline to pick their promotion letters from the County Department of Health on Monday, December 30th, 2019.

"The County Government of Kisumu and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, Nyanza Branch have been proactively engaged on the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with specific reference to the promotion of doctors. All loose ends have been tied, and an agreement reached," said the statement signed by Alphonse Ouya, Chief Officer, Administration and Partnerships, Department of Health and Sanitation-Kisumu County, and Kevin Osuri, Chair KMPDU, Nyanza branch.

The two parties have agreed to hold a joint press conference at the County Headquarters next Monday to make public the agreements reached.
