On December 28, 2019, Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino made a promise to pay school fees for a 13-year-old girl from Kisumu County who had threatened to commit suicide due to her parents' inability to finance her education.

The girl, who scored 391 marks in her KCPE exam at Xaverian Primary School in Kisumu Central, was selected to join Asumbi Girls in early January 2020. However, upon realizing that her parents could not afford the Ksh.53,544 fee required for the year, the girl wrote a suicide note.

Her mother, Lucy Emily Ombok, revealed that her daughter had been troubled since the release of the KCPE results. Fortunately, the girl's situation has received attention from well-wishers, with some offering to pay her school fees.

Responding to the situation, Babu Owino took to social media and vowed to ensure the young girl achieves her dreams. He stated, 'I will pay school fees for this leaner to ensure she achieves her dreams. A child belongs to the community and I would like to give an opportunity to others the same way I was given through fund raising and through selling Chang’aa. Vanity is Vanity.'
