December 28, 2019 - Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has sounded the alarm over the escalating political tensions in Kenya, warning that early 2022 politics could result in assassinations.

Mutunga, a former political detainee, took to Twitter to urge politicians to exercise moderation and rethink their actions, which he noted could have dire consequences for the country.

He drew parallels with Kenya's history since independence, where similar conflicts have led to political assassinations, murders, rapes, destruction of property, and baronial alliances that failed to bring peace.

His remarks come amid a heated confrontation between Deputy President William Ruto and Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga.

Raila had called for a life audit of the DP, while Ruto demanded respect from the former Premier, who had asked Kenyans to be patient with the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

ODM boss Raila Odinga had expressed gratitude to Kenyans for standing with them against all odds, saying it would take time to achieve their goals, but they were on track.

However, the sentiments were not well-received by the Deputy President, who tweeted back, saying Kenya was the collective business of its 47 million citizens, and not the exclusive domain of a few individuals.
