On December 28, 2019, Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama made a generous commitment to support six needy secondary school students through his charity organisation, the Victor Wanyama Foundation.
Initially, Wanyama had planned to sponsor two students, but after receiving a large number of applications, he decided to increase the number to six.
The six students, including Sammy Oriko and Lamech Makokha who will attend Maranda High School, will enjoy free tuition and boarding throughout their four years in high school.
According to a statement from the foundation, the students will receive full educational scholarships for the four years they will be in high school and any other necessary support to ensure they are fully settled in school and working hard to achieve their goals.
Wanyama has also pledged to visit all the six students at their new institutions when he visits Kenya in mid-2020.
Furthermore, the philanthropic midfielder has plans to set up a fully-fledged Sports Academy in Busia and has recently bought a team bus for his former club, County Club, based at Muthurwa where he grew up.
