Kenya's National Police Service (NPS) has come down hard on policewomen for flouting the dress code by sporting colourful hairstyles.
Deputy Inspector General of Police G Edward Mbugua issued a directive on December 20, 2019, warning that officers in all ranks, including policewomen, would no longer be allowed to wear 'overdone hairstyles' from January 1, 2020.
During a recent tour of police facilities, Mbugua observed that officers were disregarding the dress code, with some even failing to wear peaked caps or berets.
He also noted that some female Muslim officers were wearing coloured headscarves instead of the allowed thick black scarves.
According to Mbugua, the uniform is a sign of authority and should be accorded the respect it deserves.
