On December 28, 2019, a Taliban attack on an Afghan base in Sangin, Helmand, left 4 soldiers dead and 4 others wounded.

Nawab Zadran, a spokesman for the 215 Maiwand Army Corps, revealed that the Taliban had dug a tunnel into the base before detonating explosives, allowing them to breach the compound.

"There were 18 soldiers in the base at the time of the attack providing security for the people of Sangin. Four soldiers were wounded and four repelled the Taliban attack bravely," Zadran said.

Provincial spokesman Omar Zawak confirmed the attack, stating that the soldiers were killed by the powerful blast inside the base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement sent to media outlets, with spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid asserting their involvement.

The attack comes as local and international forces prepare for another deadly winter in Afghanistan, amidst ongoing US-Taliban talks aimed at ending the violence in the country.

Just days prior, 7 Afghan soldiers were killed in a Taliban attack on a base in the northern province of Balkh.
