Raila Slams Judiciary for Slow Pace in Anti-Corruption Cases ¶
On December 27, 2019, Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), spoke at the funeral of former Court of Appeal Judge Otieno Odek. He criticized the judiciary for its slow pace in handling anti-corruption cases, saying it is a major obstacle to the fight against corruption in Kenya.
According to Raila, the judiciary is slow in handling anti-corruption cases because it takes too long to gather evidence and make decisions. He questioned why it takes three weeks to resolve election-related cases, but months or even years to resolve corruption cases.
"If the judiciary can resolve election cases in three weeks, why does it take months or even years to resolve corruption cases?" Raila asked.
He also questioned why the judiciary is slow in handling corruption cases, saying it is because the prosecution often fails to provide sufficient evidence. He said this has made the judiciary a "bottleneck" in the fight against corruption.
"Every time, it is the prosecution that fails to provide sufficient evidence, and this is why the judiciary has become a bottleneck in the fight against corruption," Raila said.
Raila also criticized President Uhuru Kenyatta for his comments on the judiciary, saying he has been criticizing the judiciary for its slow pace in handling corruption cases. He said the President and he have agreed to work together to fight corruption, but the judiciary must also play its role.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has also criticized the judiciary for its slow pace in handling corruption cases, saying it is a major obstacle to the fight against corruption in Kenya.
