On December 28, 2019, a devastating explosion rocked Wajir county, claiming the lives of two security officers and leaving seven others seriously injured.

The incident occurred when the security officers' vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted along the route, according to Wajir County Police Commander Thomas Ngeywa.

"I can confirm that our officers who were on a routine patrol were seriously injured after the vehicle they were travelling in hit an IED that had been planted along the route," Ngeywa stated.

This incident comes in the wake of sustained attacks by Somalia-based terrorist group Al-Shabaab, which has been responsible for several attacks in the region.

Earlier this month, on December 7, eleven people lost their lives after a Mandera-bound bus was attacked by suspected Al-Shabaab militants, while six others escaped with minor injuries.
