On December 28, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a film incentives package during a Cabinet meeting, aimed at attracting foreign filmmakers to shoot movies in Kenya.

The move is seen as a bid to capitalize on Kenya's growing reputation as a filming destination, with its diverse landscapes and talented actors.

However, the signing of the incentives package has been met with skepticism by many in the film industry, who point out that the government has consistently failed to support local filmmakers.

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has been accused of hypocrisy, with its head supporting the incentives package while refusing to air local films like Wanuri Kahiu's 'Rafiki' in Kenyan cinemas.

The film's ban was a result of a public court battle, and even then, it was only shown for a week. This has led many to question the sincerity of the government's efforts to support the film industry.

Local filmmakers are calling for equal support and incentives for Kenyan filmmakers, rather than just foreign ones. They argue that the government should prioritize the development of the local film industry, rather than just trying to attract foreign investment.

The Kenya Film Commission has been begging for incentives for years, highlighting the lack of support for the film industry.

As the government continues to prioritize foreign filmmakers, local filmmakers are left to struggle with the numerous challenges of making movies in Kenya, including permits, certification, and finding a good crew.

The hypocrisy and neglect of the film industry are evident in the fact that DSTV, which airs all over Africa, is showing 'Rafiki' in all countries except Kenya.

It's time for the government to take a more proactive approach to supporting the film industry, rather than just paying lip service to it.
