On August 20, 1978, President Jomo Kenyatta honoured Henry Rono and Steve Muchoki for their outstanding contributions to sports in Kenya. Rono was awarded the Order of the Burning Spear (OBS), second class, while Muchoki received the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), third class.

The two athletes were recognized for their achievements in their respective sports. Rono had broken four world records, while Muchoki became the first Kenyan to clinch a world title in amateur boxing.

However, 41 years have passed since the awards were announced, and Rono and Muchoki have yet to receive their rewards. According to the Presidential decrees, directives, or orders, they are supposed to be obeyed.

It is the humble appeal of the author to President Uhuru Kenyatta to look into this matter and bring back the smile on the faces of these two great Kenyans who have been in their own wilderness for 41 years.

On December 28, 2019, the author met with Rono and Muchoki to discuss their experiences and the rewards they were yet to receive. Rono shared his story of life in America and how he felt happy to be back in Kenya. Muchoki also shared his experiences and expressed his desire to receive the rewards that were promised to him.

The author believes that it is time for the government to take action and honour the noble intentions of the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The rewards that were promised to Rono and Muchoki should be given to them as soon as possible.
