On Christmas Day, Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris sparked controversy after she and Keroche Breweries visited the Little Sisters of the Poor home in Nairobi's Kasarani area to share gifts with elderly residents.
Passaris tweeted that her team distributed fruits, vegetables, and beer donated by Keroche Breweries to the elderly people. She wrote, "...we gave out fruits and vegetables and then plenty of beer donated by @KerocheBrewery to the old. All in all, its been a great Christmas. My heart is full."
“…we gave out fruits and vegetables and then plenty of beer donated by @KerocheBrewery to the old. All in all, its been a great Christmas. My heart is full,” she wrote. However, not everyone was pleased with Passaris's gesture. Some social media users questioned why beer was given to the elderly, with @ramugangai tweeting, "Surely Mama Taa, the elderly need healthier foods & drinks on Christmas Day BM and NOT beer." @ramugangai tweeted: “Surely Mama Taa, the elderly need healthier foods & drinks on Christmas Day BM and NOT beer.” Passaris defended the move, stating that they also donated dry food, fruits, and vegetables, and that the elderly people requested the beer. She added that they provided sugar-free beer and other soft drinks and juices. Little Sisters of the Poor, also known as 'Nyumba ya Wazee', is a home for senior citizens that hosts 72 elderly people aged between 72 to 106. The sanctuary is operated by a group of Catholic Church sisters.
