On March 17, 2019, former Valencia Marathon champion Sammy Kiprop Kitwara failed an in-competition doping control in Seoul, South Korea, testing positive for Terbutaline.

Kitwara, a long-distance runner, was subsequently handed a 16-month ban by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for the doping violation.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) confirmed that Kitwara had accepted the ban and would not appeal.

According to the AIU, Kitwara's subjective fault was considered 'high' due to his experience and lack of mitigating factors.

However, the AIU also noted that Kitwara's timely admission of the violation after being confronted by the AIU allowed for discretion to back-date the start of the ban to the date of sample collection.

Kitwara's results since March 17, 2019, are now null and void.

Kitwara set a massive record at the Marathon Valencia Trinidad Alfonso EDP in 2017, finishing in 2:05:15 and moving to seventh on that year's world list.
