Embu Provincial Prison was the scene of a tragic incident on Christmas Day, as an inmate serving a life sentence allegedly committed suicide.

According to prison officer in charge Henry Ochieng, the convict, who had been jailed for a robbery with violence offence committed at Kangeta in Igembe South, Meru County, hanged himself using his clothes.

The inmate had previously served his sentence in another prison from 2013 before being transferred to Embu in 2016.

County police commander Daniel Rukunga confirmed that investigations into the incident have been launched.

Elsewhere, a family in Katheri-Kirungurune, Imenti Central, was left reeling after their home was broken into and set on fire while they were away celebrating Christmas.

Thugs stole valuables, including electronics, utensils, clothing, and money, and set ablaze houses in the homestead and a zero-grazing unit with six dairy cows.

Some of the cows sustained burn wounds before the neighbors and fire brigade from the Meru Fire Station put out the fire at around 3am on Friday.

“This incident occurred from around 1am to 3am but my neighbours called me at about 5am to inform me of the bad news,” dairy farmer Dominic Kiogora said.
