On December 27, 2019, Zambia's Energy Regulation Board approved a plan to raise electricity tariffs, a move aimed at helping the state power utility, Zesco Limited, operate efficiently and viably.
According to Raymond Mpundu, chairperson of the energy regulator, the new tariffs will come into effect on January 1, 2020, with household consumers facing a 200% increase and commercial consumers facing a 49% increase.
"Zesco is facing serious financial problems with regard to its profitability, liquidity, solvency and efficiency," Mpundu said in a statement.
