This archive report was first published on 27 December 2019.

On Thursday evening, a 36-year-old woman lost her life after being trampled by an elephant at Ol Arabel Forest on the Baringo-Laikipia border.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the woman, identified as Stella Chebii, was tracing her stray livestock when she encountered the elephant.

"We are sad to report the tragic loss of a 36-year-old woman who was attacked by an elephant near the border," KWS stated in a press release.

The agency has since deployed Problem Animal Control teams to monitor elephant movement and prevent further attacks on residents living near the forest.

"The area has experienced an influx of elephants in the recent past. The public is being cautioned to be vigilant when approaching forest areas," KWS warned.

The police collected the woman's body from the scene and moved it to Nyahururu Hospital Mortuary, where it is being held for further processing.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
