Between July and September, Kenyans made 661.6 million mobile money transactions valued at Kshs 1.7 trillion.
According to the Communications Authority's first quarter report for the 2019/2020 financial year, the increase in mobile money services was driven by improved access to mobile network signals and exciting product offers by telecos, which pushed mobile penetration to 112 percent.
During the period, there were 425.3 million mobile commerce transactions valued at Kshs 1.6 trillion.
Person-to-Person Transfers were valued at Kshs 665.0 billion, with increased mobile penetration driven by innovations by telecos and consumers owning more than one Sim card to take advantage of diverse services.
The enhanced promotions and special on-voice offers also pushed local voice traffic originating from mobile networks up by 10.4 percent during the quarter under review to 17.8 billion minutes from 16.2 billion minutes registered during the previous quarter.
Significant traffic emanated from roaming within the East African Community, especially from countries within the One Network Area regime that are enjoying relatively low calling rates, with the bulk originating from Uganda, South Sudan, and Rwanda.
