As the year draws to a close, three governors in Kenya are facing the fight of their lives after being charged with graft.

On December 27, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was ordered to stay out of his City Hall office until the case is determined, with experts warning that service delivery could grind to a halt next year due to the lack of a deputy.

Mr. Sonko, who faces 19 counts of corruption-related charges, including receiving more than Sh25 million through proxies, has been without a deputy since Polycarp Igathe's resignation in February 2019.

Unlike Mr. Sonko, Kiambu's Ferdinand Waititu and Moses Lenolkulal have acting deputies who have assumed leadership, ensuring operations run smoothly.

However, the Court of Appeal's ruling last week has put the trio in a difficult position, with Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) planning to kick them out of office.

MCAs in Kiambu have already voted to impeach Governor Waititu, while those in Nairobi are mulling impeachment of Mr. Sonko, citing the negative impact on service delivery.
