On December 27, 2019, police in Meru made a significant breakthrough in the fight against car theft, arresting three individuals suspected of selling stolen vehicles.
According to the DCI, the three suspects, Nicholas Opiyo, 20, Kelvin Oduor Demba, 28, and Patrick Mburugu, 36, were trailed from Nairobi to Meru following a tip-off from the public.
During the operation, police also intercepted two vehicles with similar registration details, which were seized as evidence.
This is not the first time police have cracked down on a car theft syndicate in Nairobi. On September 1, three suspects were arrested in Kasarani area, suspected of being part of a gang that has been drugging motorists to steal their cars.
Police also seized drugs and recovered two vehicles and SIM cards that were allegedly stolen.
The suspects are believed to be behind a string of robberies in Kasarani and Roysambu areas, and are alleged to have used psychotropic drugs on their unsuspecting victims at nightclubs as their preferred mode of operation.
