On December 27, 2019, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced the transfer of thousands of classroom teachers across Kenya.

According to TSC boss Nancy Macharia, the transfers were undertaken at the end of the year to minimize disruption to the learning process.

Ms Macharia stated that 1,010 principals in secondary schools and 1,621 head teachers in primary schools had been transferred, citing several criteria including length of stay at a station, personal request, health status, promotion, and age.

Teachers were expected to report to their new duty stations by January 3, 2020, for administrators, and January 6, 2020, for teachers.

The TSC launched the delocalisation programme in 2017, which has been met with mixed reactions from teachers, with some quitting their jobs while others sought employment in county governments.
