On December 27, 2019, a murder suspect in Malindi High Court disputed a mental assessment report that deemed him fit to stand trial.
Jackson Mwalimu Karisa, accused of murdering Kabibi Kitsao Masha, claimed he had not been assessed by any doctor as alleged by the prosecution.
He insisted he was of unsound mind, contradicting a report from a psychiatrist at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The report, signed by Dr. C. Mwangome, a consultant psychiatrist, stated that Karisa had no mental illness and was fit to take plea.
However, Karisa's lawyer, Tonia Mwania, said she was ready to proceed with the matter, but her client stood his ground, denying any mental assessment.
Justice Reuben Nyakundi ordered a fresh mental assessment before Karisa takes plea, with the case to be mentioned on January 6, 2020.
