On December 25, 2019, a Nation journalist, Dickens Wasonga, received a chilling phone call from a senior police officer, Sabina Kerubo, who is a state witness in a murder case. The officer, who had been living with the victim, Eric Oloo, a Star newspaper reporter, allegedly threatened to kill Wasonga over articles he published about Oloo's death.
According to Wasonga, Kerubo called him at around 3 pm and warned that he would die the same way Oloo died. The journalist had published articles about Oloo's death, which Kerubo claimed defamed her.
On November 21, 2019, Oloo's blood-soaked body was found in Kerubo's bedroom in Ugunja town. Five people, including Kerubo, were taken into custody, but two suspects, including Kerubo's daughter and househelp, were later released.
Wasonga reported the matter at Bondo police station under OB No. 28/25/12/19, and the police are now investigating the case.
Ms. Kerubo, who is now a state witness, warned Wasonga of dire consequences, saying 'Mimi ni yule mwenye ulikuwa ukichora kwa gazeti (I am the one you published her story in the newspaper). Whatever you did to me you will pay for it.'
She also hurled insults at Wasonga, calling him 'Mbwa wewe (you're a dog)'. Wasonga, however, told her to seek legal redress if the stories offended her.
