On December 26, 2019, the High Court intervened in a dispute between the Child Welfare Society of Kenya (CWSK) and the government, ordering Social Protection Principal Secretary Nelson Marwa to act as a signatory to the society's bank accounts.
The court's decision aimed to ensure that children under the society's care received support during the festive season. In a ruling, Justice David Majanja directed the society to appoint two of its trustees to serve alongside Mr. Marwa as signatories.
However, the court also set a deadline for accessing the society's accounts at KCB and Equity banks, limiting it to January 13, 2020. Mr. Marwa was given the liberty to appoint another person to represent him as a signatory.
Justice Majanja emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of children under CWSK's care, stating, "Having regard of the issues raised and to ensure that the rights of children under CWSK are protected, those accounts will strictly operate to take care of the needs of these youngsters."
