As Kenyans celebrate the Christmas season, the country continues to grapple with a disturbing trend of road accidents that claim lives and leave many injured.
Between December 17 and 18, a total of 13 road users lost their lives in different parts of the country, highlighting the need for increased vigilance on the roads.
According to NTSA Director General, George Njao, the agency will work closely with the police to reduce road fatalities by intensifying road safety public education campaigns and enforcing traffic regulations.
Mr. Njao pointed out that human behavior is the main cause of road accidents, with 98% of crashes attributed to factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline, overloading, and dangerous overtaking.
As of December 19, a total of 3,409 road users have lost their lives since January 1, 2019, with pedestrians accounting for 1,323 fatalities, followed by motorcyclists with 691 deaths.
Despite the efforts of the police and NTSA, road accidents continue to claim lives, with 195 fatalities recorded in December alone.
