2019 was a year that will be remembered for its bizarre and shocking news stories. One of the most striking incidents of the year was the case of Martin Munene, a man from Tharaka Nithi County who was arrested for slaughtering and eating his dog.

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi and detained for days before his lawyers wrote to the court stating that he was under bed arrest after he was roughened up during his arrest. Dr. Esther Nafula Wekesa, a Palliative Care and Pain Management Specialist, wrote in her progress report: 'MIKE MBUVI SONKO IS A PATIENT CURRENTLY UNDER MY CARE. HE WAS ADMITTED TO WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF HYPERTENSIVE URGENCY, SOFT TISSUE INJURY TO THE LEFT CHEST WAL BDATERAI HIP OSTEOARTHNES. HE HAD NO PREVIOUS HISTORY OF HYPERTENSION. HE WAS STARTED ON ANTIHYPERTENSIVES AND ANALGESICS AND LATER DISCHARGED TO CONTINUE WITH TREATMENT AT HOME.'
