On December 25, 2019, the Chinese government made a significant donation to support the victims of the devastating landslide in West Pokot County, which claimed the lives of 58 people.
Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa delivered a cheque worth 10 million Kenyan Shillings to Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo, who received it on behalf of the affected community.
According to Wamalwa, the government has implemented measures to ensure the victims are integrated back into their community before schools reopen in January.
The Chinese government's donation will be used to help the victims construct new houses, with plans to start the construction in January.
Additionally, the government has invested 250 million Kenyan Shillings in a cross-border initiative to construct a dam in Nasal Pokot North sub-county, aimed at preventing similar disasters in the future.
Speaking at the governor's residence, Wamalwa assured the residents that the government is committed to improving their lives through various initiatives.
Area Governor Prof. John Lonyangapuo revealed that the multi-urgency committee has decided to construct two-roomed houses with a side kitchen and toilet for the victims, which will cost 35 million Kenyan Shillings.
