Kenya's Immigration Department has been working to meet a March 1st, 2020 deadline for the adoption of new e-passports.
However, the department announced on Tuesday that it would suspend passport issuance services until the end of the week, citing 'unscheduled maintenance'.
According to the Directorate of Immigration Services, the system will undergo maintenance and normal services will resume on Friday, December 27th, 2019.
Thousands of Kenyans have been applying for the new e-passports ahead of the deadline, with at least one million having acquired the digital passports so far.
The government had previously announced that old passports would become invalid on September 1st, 2019, but President Kenyatta later extended the deadline to March, 2020.
