Ken Okoth, the Kibra MP, left an indelible mark on Kenyans with his courageous battle against cancer. In February this year, he publicly disclosed his diagnosis, stating that he knew he wouldn't be healed but would continue fighting.
Okoth opted for chemotherapy in Europe, citing the affordability of the treatment, which was a stark contrast to the expensive options available in the US. His decision was influenced by his wife's European roots, where the cost of treatment was more manageable.
Despite his poor health, Okoth remained active on social media, using the platform to raise awareness about cancer and its management. In March, he shared a picture of himself undergoing chemotherapy, highlighting the brutal effects of the treatment on the skin and immunity system.
However, Okoth's battle with cancer was not without its challenges. In April, social media was flooded with rumors of his demise, but he swiftly dismissed the claims, urging Kenyans to stop speculating about his fate.
Tragically, Okoth succumbed to his illness on July 26, leaving behind a legacy of courage and resilience. Just two weeks prior to his passing, he made a poignant appearance at the Kibra Arts Festival, where he inquired about the bursaries he had promised to the residents, despite his frail state.
Okoth's brother, Imran, who is now the Kibra MP, revealed that Ken had a remarkable understanding of the medications being administered to him, a testament to his determination to stay informed about his treatment.
Okoth's story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing cancer treatment and the need for affordable healthcare options.
