On December 25, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was awarded the World Peace Messenger 2019 Award by the US-based World Peace and Diplomacy Organization.
The award recognized Sonko's commitment to reforming youth associated with criminal groups and his efforts in reaching out to the less fortunate.
"I am so humbled and gratified to have been recognized at such a high level but this can only make me proud of the bold steps I have made in my life," said Sonko.
Kenyan social advocate Betty Adera received the award on behalf of Sonko during a ceremony held in Los Angeles, CA. Adera is the CEO and founder of the Betty Adera Foundation International, which focuses on preventing gender-based violence and empowering youth.
Notably, Sonko was recently barred from accessing his office after being charged with corruption related to the alleged misappropriation of county funds amounting to KSh.357 million.
