December 25, 2019, marked the beginning of a heated debate at the Nairobi County Assembly over a plot to prevent the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko. The alleged plan involved flying 18 MCAs to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to deny the motion requisite numbers in the House.
According to a letter seen by The Standard, the MCAs were to be accompanied by three assembly staff for the 11-day trip, which had already been approved by the Finance and Economic planning chief officers. The letter, dated December 10, 2019, requested the Executive to facilitate the ward representatives' living and transport expenses.
However, some of the MCAs listed in the group denied knowledge of the trip, claiming the ousted House leadership was behind the narrative to portray rivals in a bad light. Morris Gari, the Nairobi West MCA, stated, “We know who is behind this letter and they are trying to do it for political mileage.”
Deputy Majority leader Millicent Mugadi alleged that the firm behind the Dubai conference was the same one that had hosted the former House leadership on several occasions. In response, former Majority Leader Abdi Guyo denied any involvement in the leaked letter, stating, “I am not aware of any trip and I have nothing to do with spreading the narrative.”
