Charles Wanyoike Rubia, a man of unyielding resolve and conviction, left an indelible mark on Kenya's history. His life's work was a testament to the power of public service and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.
As a young man, Rubia worked as a clerk in the British East Africa postal service, a humble beginning that would lay the foundation for his future success. He later ventured into business, becoming an alderman and eventually a Cabinet minister under Daniel arap Moi.
However, Rubia's relationship with Moi was complicated, and he eventually fell out with the former president. In a matter-of-fact manner, Rubia explained, 'I believe he chose me a minister because I merited the office. My parting with Moi was a patriotic cris de coeur. Protest voice was needed.'
One of the most significant moments in Rubia's life came when he was hounded in jail in 1990 for criticizing the excesses of the regime. In the adjoining room, his friend Kenneth Matiba protested bitterly, but Rubia remained steadfast, reminding him that 'Brother Matiba, being bitter is pointless. Can't you see Moi's is a crumbling regime?'
Rubia's legacy extends far beyond his own life. He is often referred to as the father of Kenya's second liberation, a title he humbly accepted, saying, 'In the struggle to dislodge Moi from power, many fathers and mothers paid the full price. The approximate truth is that I was one among them.'
As the first African mayor of Nairobi, Rubia ensured that citizens got value for their money, and as a Cabinet minister, he extolled the virtues of public service. He remained committed to his values, even in the face of corruption, saying, 'I was an old man and needed to ruminate about my service to Kenyans. I didn't want to compete with my children for public appointments. My time was past.'
Charles Rubia's life was a beautiful lie, but he chose to live a painful truth. He will be remembered as a man of candour, a true patriot, and a shining example of what it means to serve others selflessly.
