On December 24, 2017, a devastating road accident occurred at River Liwondwe Bridge on the Ekero-Buyangu highway in Kakamega County, claiming the lives of five people and leaving five others seriously injured.

The victims, including young children, were traveling from Nairobi to Busia for the Christmas festivities when the accident occurred.

Mumias OCPD Peter Kattam confirmed the incident, stating that a man, his wife, and their children were among the deceased. He urged motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic rules, especially during the festive season.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to St Mary's Mumias mortuary, while the injured were receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority recommended alternative routes for motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru highway due to heavy traffic jams experienced by travelers on the road.

The authority suggested taking the Southern Bypass through Gikambura, Gigiri, or Mutarakwa, then Ndenderu and Kamandura to bypass the James Gichuru to Rironi (A3) road. Alternatively, motorists could take the Flyover to Njambini, Engineer, Olkalau, Lanet, or Naivasha, then Engineer, Olkalau, and Lanet to avoid the GilGil weighbridge.
