On December 24, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was recognized for his humanitarian efforts with the World Peace Messenger award by the World Peace and Diplomacy Organization at a ceremony in Los Angeles, USA.
The award was accepted on Sonko's behalf by Kenyan Betty Adera, who was also honored as a Humanitarian and Global icon.
As a result of this recognition, Sonko is set to join other African appointees in spearheading peace and humanitarian initiatives across the continent.
During the ceremony, Sonko expressed his pride in his achievements, particularly in addressing the needs of the vulnerable and reforming criminal youth gangs.
"I am so humbled and gratified to have been recognized at such a high level," Sonko said. "This can only make me proud of the bold steps I have made in my life."
Under Sonko's leadership, more than 1,000 youths have been taken away from the streets and provided with rehabilitation in Nairobi in the past two years.
County officials, including County Secretary Leboo Morintant and CECs Vesca Kagongo and Allan Igambi, have congratulated Sonko on the award.
