On December 11th, 2019, the Kenya Education Management Institute hosted the 'First Peace Educator Workshop for the Kenya National Commission for UNESCO (KNATCOM)'.
Organized by HWPL, an international NGO affiliated with the UN ECOSOC, the workshop brought together 34 participants, including educators from UNESCO-associated schools and officials from the Ministry of Education.
The workshop aimed to enable educators to experience and practice peace value education through presentation sessions and pilot classes.
According to HWPL, peace education serves as a global platform to 'leave peace as a legacy to future generations' by raising awareness and fostering a culture of peace.
Ms. Dorah Kitala, principal education officer at the Ministry of Education, praised the innovative peace education materials and expressed her commitment to working with HWPL in the future.
As a result of the workshop, 20 educators from UNESCO-associated schools signed an agreement to teach peace education in their institutions, with the goal of dispersing peace education throughout Kenya.
HWPL has already endorsed peace education in over 220 educational institutions globally and has established partnerships with government agencies in several countries, including the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Guatemala.
The partnership between KNATCOM, HWPL, and the Ministry of Education is considering formalizing peace education activities throughout the country.
