As Christmas approaches, many of us are eager to deck the halls and spread cheer. However, the festive season also brings a significant amount of waste, from discarded wrapping paper to plastic decorations.

According to a 2019 report, the average person generates 75% more waste during the holiday season. This not only harms the environment but also contributes to the staggering 1 billion tons of waste produced globally each year.

So, how can we make this Christmas more sustainable? Muthoni suggests starting with small changes, such as using reusable bags and containers for gifts and decorations. She also recommends opting for eco-friendly wrapping paper and choosing gifts that are made from sustainable materials.

Another way to reduce waste is to get creative with DIY decorations. Instead of buying plastic ornaments, try making your own using natural materials like pinecones, twigs, and leaves.

Additionally, consider hosting a potluck dinner or game night instead of a traditional holiday feast. This not only reduces food waste but also fosters a sense of community and connection with loved ones.

As Muthoni so aptly puts it, 'Every small change counts, and together we can make a significant impact on the environment.'
