On December 16th, 2019, Court of Appeal Judge Otieno Odek was found dead in his bed at Groovehut Apartments in Kisumu, a stone's throw from the Kisumu Central police station.
A postmortem conducted by chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed that the judge died as a result of a clot in the vein of his right leg, known as pulmonary thromboembolism.
According to Oduor, the clot choked the heart, and the main cause of the clot was injuries to the legs.
Oduor attributed the blood becoming static due to prolonged sitting, which is a risk factor for the judge, given his job involves a lot of sitting.
Initially, the police report stated that Justice Odek had bruises on his right arm, but they later dismissed it, stating 'there were no signs of struggle in the apartment.'
The postmortem was conducted alongside Directorate of Criminal Investigations officials, and the exercise was postponed last week following a directive by Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti.
Kinoti directed that the exercise be done in the presence of Oduor, who was not available by then.
