Published on December 24, 2019, Governor Mike Sonko's grip on City Hall is under threat as Agnes Kagure is set to officiate over this year's Christmas celebrations.
According to sources close to Kagure, the controversial businessman plans to declare herself the governor after the ceremony, leaving many to wonder if this is a signal that Sonko's time at City Hall is coming to an end.
The Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a tradition practiced worldwide, is a significant event that marks the official start of Christmas celebrations. In Nairobi, Governor Sonko has officiated over the ceremony for two years, but the courts barred him from setting foot at City Hall in 2019.
City Hall staff have confirmed receiving invitations to the event bearing Kagure's name, fuelling speculations of questionable business deals between Raila Odinga and the controversial businesswoman.
Friends of the embattled Governor have asked the police to reinforce security at the county headquarters to prevent Kagure from taking over.
