On August 31, 2016, Lameck Otunga of Barding High School (Kenya) was in action against Kibuli of Uganda during their East Africa Secondary School Games football match at Hill School, Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Fast forward to 2019, Barding High School from Siaya County made history by emerging champions of the inaugural Nyapere Youth tournament, outplaying over 24 teams to win the title.
The Siaya County giants edged out Mur Green 2-0 in the final to claim the top spot, pocketing Sh100,000 as cash prize, jerseys, and a trophy.
The runner-up, Mur Green, won Sh50,000 and jerseys, while Ochilo Boys defeated Ojwando Boys 4-2 in post-match penalties to win the Sh30,000 third-place playoff awards.
Meanwhile, in the women's category, Mur Malanga Queens defeated Upanda Ladies 3-0 to win the championships.
The tournament, which aimed to address problems facing the community like crime, drug abuse, and other socio-economic affairs, was sponsored by Leonard Nyapere.
Speaking after the win, Barding captain Zablon Odhiambo thanked the sponsor for organizing the tournament, saying it was a good initiative for the youth, especially during the festive season.
