Kalonzo's Surprise Move: Joining Forces with Uhuru in 2022 ¶
On December 23, 2019, Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of Wiper Party, made a surprise announcement that he would be joining forces with President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 elections.
Speaking at a meeting with Ukambani leaders at his home in Yatta, Kalonzo stated that he would be supporting President Kenyatta's bid for re-election in 2022.
He emphasized that he would no longer be part of the opposition, citing a 'cold war' within the opposition ranks.
Kalonzo also expressed his desire for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) to recommend a powerful prime minister and a leader of the opposition.
Notably, several governors who were expected to attend the meeting, including Alfred Mutua, Charity Ngilu, and Kivutha Kibwana, were absent.
These governors have been seen as loyal to Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition, and have been planning their own political strategies.
However, the wiper party leaders who attended the meeting expressed their support for Kalonzo and warned Mutua and his team that they would lose their seats in 2022 if they did not follow Kalonzo's lead.
Alfred Mutua has already announced his intention to run for president in 2022.
It remains to be seen how this surprise move will affect the political landscape in Kenya.
