Published on December 24, 2019, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o has expressed frustration over the delay in the construction of the Sh24 billion Soin-Koru dam.
The proposed dam, located at the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties, was awarded a contract in 2016 but has stalled due to unresolved issues.
According to Nyong'o, the dam is crucial in addressing water shortages and floods in Kisumu, and he has urged the State department responsible for its construction to resolve any outstanding issues and begin work next year.
‘We cannot continue to suffer and yet we have a solution to our water problems. Matters occasioning the delay must be resolved, even if it means going to court,' said Nyong'o.
State officials, however, have expressed reservations about the project's cost, with the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority (NWHSA) allegedly suggesting that the dam could be delivered for less than the allocated amount.
The Soin-Koru dam is expected to supply up to 70 million litres of water when completed, benefiting residents of Muhoroni and Koitaburot in Kisumu and Kericho counties.
