On December 23, 2019, the Kenyan government announced plans to build a Sh30 billion network of roads in central Kenya, aiming to reduce congestion and boost economic growth.

Transport Secretary James Macharia said the project, known as Mau Mau Road, would be completed within two years. The road will span 150 kilometers and pass through 69 markets in Nyeri, Murang'a, Nyandarua, and Kiambu counties.

The road will start at Gataka in Limuru sub-county and snake through Kiambu's Kamahindu and Kibichoi to Murang'a's Kinyona in Kigumo and Ichichi in Kangema before reaching Nyeri County.

The project aims to reduce congestion on the Nairobi-Nyeri road, which is the second most congested road in the country after the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

The new road will also create economic opportunities for Murang'a and Nyeri counties, which lack tarmacked road links to agriculture-rich Nyandarua County.
