On December 23, 2019, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer sent a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling for the Senate to subpoena key documents and witnesses in the upcoming impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
According to Schumer, the documents requested include email communications, messages, memoranda, and other records related to the July 25 call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as White House records related to the whistleblower complaint that sparked the House impeachment inquiry.
Additionally, Schumer requested that the State Department provide detailed notes, emails, text and WhatsApp messages, memorandums to file, and diplomatic cables pertinent to the investigation that State Department witnesses told the House are being withheld.
These demands come on the heels of newly released emails that shed new light on Trump's effort to solicit Ukraine to help him win re-election in 2020.
