Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his support for players walking off the field in protest against racist abuse.

The incident in question occurred during a London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, where Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger reported being subjected to racist abuse by home supporters.

Guardiola, who was speaking at a news conference on Monday, said he would back his players if they ever found themselves in a similar situation.

"Of course. I support my players, I support the initiative," Guardiola said.

He added that the issue of racism extends far beyond football and may never be fully defeated, but that it's a battle that needs to be fought every day, especially in schools and families.

Guardiola also responded to comments from former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, who urged the club to sign him to a long-term contract.

"If I was in a deciding position at City now, I would do everything I can to keep Pep for as long as I can. He is truly the best," Kompany said.

Guardiola is under contract until after the end of the 2020/21 season and has repeatedly insisted he will see out his current deal.
