On Sunday, December 22, 2019, residents of Kitengela's New Valley estate took to the streets in protest over the discharge of raw sewer into the road by high-end rental buildings.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has since begun an audit of all buildings discharging effluent in the area, following a visit by NEMA Director General Mamo B. Mamo.
According to eyewitnesses, the discharge flows freely from the buildings to a nearby seasonal river, posing a significant health risk to locals.
NEMA's Director General, Mamo B. Mamo, has summoned all land lords of the accused buildings and ordered an audit of all buildings in the area.
Mr. Mamo has promised residents that decisive action will be taken to stop the menace, and those found to be in breach of NEMA regulations will be taken to court.
Regional NEMA officials who have been accused of ignoring the residents' cries for help will also face punishment.
