On December 23, 2019, a joint operation by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials and traffic police officers brought Thika Superhighway to a standstill, leaving motorists and commuters stranded.
According to sources, at least 58 unroadworthy vehicles had been impounded at the time of publishing, causing a massive traffic snarl up.
Two police checkpoints were mounted on the road, one at Witeithie and another near the Vincentian Retreat Centre towards Thika.
Motorists and commuters took to social media to air their grievances, with some expressing frustration at the sudden crackdown.
