As Kenyans prepare for the festive season, the National Police Service (NPS) has stepped up its efforts to ensure a smooth journey for travelers. In a bid to prevent traffic congestion, the police have deployed air support to monitor traffic along major highways.
According to the NPS, the Police Air Wing will be patrolling the country, providing air support to officers on the ground. This move is aimed at enhancing the monitoring of traffic situations along major highways, allowing for prompt intervention where necessary.
“Standing on guard this festive season is our National Police Service Airwing: it will be patrolling the country giving air support to our officers on the ground. The unit will help in monitoring the traffic situation along our major highways for prompt intervention where needed,” said the NPS in a tweet on December 23, 2019.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has warned of potential traffic snarls across the country during the festive season. The authority has advised motorists to use alternative routes, particularly those traveling on the Nairobi-Nakuru roads.
KeNHA Director-General Peter Mundinia advised motorists to use flyover-Njambini-Engineer-Olkalou-Lanet or Naivasha-Engineer-Olkalou-Lanet as alternative routes. He also suggested using the Southern Bypass-Gikambura-Mutarakwa or Gigiri-Ndenderu-Kamandura routes for bypassing James Gichuru-Rironi.
“We request motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations,” Mundinia said.
Additionally, motorists and commuters were left stranded on Thika Superhighway on Monday following a crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials and traffic police officers. Over 50 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded, causing a massive traffic snarl up.
