With the festive season in full swing, many Kenyans are taking to the roads to visit loved ones or attend parties. However, this increased traffic has led to a rise in road accidents, with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reporting that 3,123 people were killed in road accidents between January and November this year.
According to Timothy Keli, head of Business Development at AA Kenya, most accidents happen during the festive season due to a combination of factors, including speeding, violation of traffic rules, and driver fatigue. "Your behaviour could hurt other motorists and pedestrians," he warned on KTN's Morning Express show.
Keli emphasized the importance of adequate planning before embarking on a long journey, including taking breaks and ensuring that drivers are well-rested. He also criticized passengers who keep quiet while drivers violate traffic rules, saying that they threaten their own lives.
"Fatigue kills more than drink driving," Keli said, adding that drivers should strive to take refresher driving courses to improve their skills and judgment. He also highlighted the importance of checking speed limits, being cautious and alert, and ensuring that tyres and seatbelts are in good condition.
With the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, having ordered that all excess passengers will be arrested at the scene, Keli urged road users to be mindful of their actions and take necessary precautions to stay safe on the roads.
