It's been a year since gospel singer Hopekid found himself at the center of a viral threesome scandal that shook the music industry. The controversy, which broke out on Twitter, left the singer's brand damaged, friendships strained, and gigs lost.
Hopekid, who spoke to Nyakundi Report, revealed that the news spread like wildfire due to its sensitive nature and the fact that it involved a young girl. He believes that the public's sympathy played a significant role in the story's rapid escalation.
'The reason the story escalated fast is because of two things, I believe,' Hopekid explained. 'In today's society, it's hard to go against the girl-child in public even if you have done nothing wrong. Secondly, her story was told in a way that appealed to people's sympathy. And the fact that DK and I were involved because we're close buddies, it meant neither of us could vouch for the other.'
Hopekid further revealed that he and his friend DK had a meeting with Bishop Welly Odendo of Life Pool church and Karay Blue to discuss the matter and come to a resolution. An NDA was signed to keep the details of the meeting private.
However, the aftermath of the scandal was far from easy for Hopekid. He lost several endorsement deals and gigs, estimated to be worth around Sh3 million. Despite this, he gained international recognition, with Trace TV and MTV reaching out to feature him.
'We can't predict God's work,' Hopekid said. 'The unfortunate part is that we in the gospel industry are judged as a group. So a lot of those in the fraternity cut ties with me without caring whether the reports were true or not.'
