On December 22, 2019, a devastating bus accident occurred on the Lamu-Mombasa road in Kenya, claiming the lives of 48 passengers.
The bus, operated by Tawakal, was traveling from Mombasa to Lamu when it lost control and overturned in the Maisha Masha area.
According to the police chief in Mpeketoni, Harrison Njuguna, the accident was caused by poor road conditions, which were exacerbated by heavy rainfall.
Njuguna stated, "It's the driver who suffered minor injuries to his hands and legs, but the other passengers were not hurt. The accident was caused by the poor state of the road due to the heavy rainfall, and also the poor maintenance of the road."
The accident highlights the need for improved road maintenance and safety measures in Kenya.
